BEAUTY MUST-HAVES

DAY TO NIGHT DRESS ON A BUDGET

If I were to think through the key items a gal should have in her wardrobe, one of the major players would be a go-to day to night dress. And preferably one that doesn’t empty out your wallet.

This little jersey number by Leith, one of Nordstrom’s house brands, has been all the range among style bloggers for winter, spring and summer this year (there’s a long-sleeve version, too). There’s a reason why – the ruching and asymmetry is very body-flattering by drawing your eye sideways, rather than straight on (makes you appear slimmer!). Other pluses – it’s under $60, it comes in several colors and the fabric is extremely comfortable.

What I like most about it is that with the simple change of shoes and handbag, it goes from day-time brunch to night-time date. In the fall, I’ll throw a leather jacket over it with some booties to take me right into cooler temps. I’ve even seen a few fashionistas pairing it with cute sneakers, so you really can’t go wrong with a dress like this.

Jersey can be tricky, though. It loves to find and grab onto all the bulges and jiggles we’ve got! To combat this I did three things. I bought it a size larger than I usually do – I am wearing a Medium here. I chose the darkest color they offered to hide some of my beautiful butt and thigh dimples (here’s to positive body-talk!). And finally, I threw on the SPANX to hold it all in. You don’t have to do any of those, things, of course, but I do them because I like jersey fabrics but don’t always feel confident in them.

P.s. I think this dress looks particularly chic in gray, as well! Gray can wash out pale skin tones so not the best choice for me but a fabulous one for some of you. If you’re looking for a summer-to-fall transition piece, this dress is a total winner. Keep your eye out for the long-sleeve version (also under $60) for fall – they’ll release more colors soon!
