BELLE’S QUICK & EASY BEAUTY TIPS: MAKEUP FOR GIRLS WHO WEAR GLASSES

match your lipstick to your glasses on belle meets world blog

Did you now that wearing heavier eye makeup when you wear glasses is the best way to accentuate your eyes and to complement the glasses themselves? And that sometimes a statement lipstick can add a little glamour to your spectacled look? It’s true! Let’s try it today!

Stylish glasses can be a great way to make a statement when spectacles are a must in your daily life. I have 2 pair myself – one for everyday that go with just about everything and one statement pair for the times when I’m feeling super-sassy and want all the attention on my eyewear. But they can also hide some of your best features – that gorgeous face and those bright eyes! Not okay!

Understanding how to wear your glasses in the most flattering way possible comes down to a few simple concepts – shaped brows, heavy eye makeup and bright lips.

SHAPED BROWS

You might think this is a pointless step since your brows are often hidden by the top of your frames, but don’t ignore their importance in framing your face – even when you’re wearing glasses. Shape your brows with a brow pencil as you normally would when going glasses – free. Brows not only provide a border around your facial features, they also provide a reference point to the outer edge of your forehead/skull bones, which opens up your eyes  – brightening them, and making you look more youthful. Don’t skip this step!

HEAVY EYE MAKEUP

Though glasses are transparent, the thick layer of lense can make your eyes virtually disappear or seem secondary on your face. This happens a lot with frameless glasses, clear frames and frames with color on only the top half.

Applying a darker shadow, a thicker liner, and extra mascara can feel weird for daytime, but I’ve actually found that it doesn’t look too heavy at all. Instead, it really makes a huge difference in helping your bright eyes to punch through the thick and reflective lenses.

Avoid shimmer shadows under the lense, though. The shimmer particles are just as reflective as a lense, so you want to stick with matte shadows in brown, green, blue, or purple to achieve this effect we’re going for.

Apply a a wash of shadow across the lid and into the crease. Draw a thick liner across the lash line and follow up with extra coats of mascara. For extra eye opening powers, run your liner across the outer corner of your water lines (also called the inner lash line) – both top and bottom.

Add a tinted gloss and you’re good to go!

BRIGHT LIPS

If you’re not into the heavy eyes, a bright lip is a great alternative to make your glasses pop as a deliberately chosen accessory for your face – especially for colored or statement frames. The right complementary lip color can really pull the whole look together, making you a visual force to be reckoned with.

My rules of thumb for matching lip colors to glasses:

  • A set of purple or blue frames can really pop against a coral lip
  • Black cat-eyed frames look killer with bright red matte lips
  • Brown tortoise-shell frames look great with pink and purple lip colors

And if you have a pair of uber-statement frames like these I recently purchased below by Andy Wolf, focus on a color that matches the accents of the frame. I only wear these with a perfectly-matching red lip.

GLASSES ETIQUETTE FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS

If you can, I do think it’s important to take off the glasses on certain special occasions – like for weddings and other fancy dress-up occasions. This is important for the following reasons:

  • Glasses, though considered an accessory, convey an element of casualness that does not match the elevated style and behavior expected at an event where you wear a gown or cocktail dress. It doesn’t make sense aesthetically.
  • Heavy frames are also extremely distracting in professional wedding and event photos, especially on a woman wearing a fancy gown. The frames are usually among the darkest elements in the photo so your eye seeks them out against lighter elements in the picture, like skin and light gowns.
  • Finally, it can pull the attention away from what’s important – the gown, the couple and the moments at the event.

If you are in a wedding party, as a courtesy to the bride who is paying a lot for photos, leave them off. I keep a box of contacts on hand for those times. It’s only a couple hours without the spectacles and you can take the contacts out as soon as you get home from the event.

On well-dressed men, it doesn’t always have the same mis-matched effect. In fact, men in glasses can look even more polished sometimes. Sorry, ladies, but I’m holding you to a double-standard in this case.
