HOW TO DIFFUSE CURLY HAIR

How to Diffuse Curly Hair

Hey curly girls! Have you met the diffuser? If not, it’s your new best friend. Allow me to introduce you. If so, then read on and let me know if you use this a different way to get your curly locks lookin’ lovely.

There will always be frizz but at least this helps!!

Diffusers are these weird bulb/dome looking things that attach to your hair dryer and spread the air around evenly over a section of hair. It’s supposed to minimize frizz. Kind of like a convection oven for curls. I recently found this dryer with a diffuser by Revlon for under $30 at Target and I’m loving it!

  • IN THE SHOWER:

    • Flip your head upside down, run conditioner through your ends while finger combing your hair. Then let the water run through the hair upside down. My hairstylist told me this will help to start creating volume.
    • Then apply the curl primer or cream while you’re still in the shower and while the hair is still soaking wet and run it through the hair.
    • Wrap it in a towel. I’ve heard a microfiber towel is amazing for soaking up water and keeping frizz low. I haven’t bought one yet but I’m going to!

  • AFTER THE SHOWER:

    • Unwrap the towel and add more curl cream. I don’t finger comb it through this time. I scrunch so I’m covering the top layer of hair with more product.
    • Turn the hairdryer on HIGH heat, LOW power. Yes, LOW POWER. This keeps it from blowing all the little hairs around and creating frizz.
    • Flip your head upside down and GENTLY lay sections of hair onto diffuser. Just hold it there for a while and then move onto another section. I go back to each section a few times.
    • Don’t fully dry the hair – you can leave dampness.
    • Flip head upright – you should see some good volume up top – and gently lay the ends onto the diffuser.
    • You can also hold it gently over other parts of the crown and ridges of the head. I like to apply the heat passively, meaning I kind of hold the diffuser at an angle so the air blows sideways over the hair, rather than directly down.
    • Remember, your hair should still be a little damp.

  • AFTER DIFFUSING:

    • Gently apply some mousse or a finishing oil to your hands and scrunch a bit more if you like, to seal the deal.
    • Sometimes I’ll follow up with a small curling iron on uber frizzy pieces around the ridge and the bangs area to pull it all together.
    • Now leave it alone! There’s always going to be some frizz, but don’t touch it a lot or it will keep frizzing.

Thanks to my fave stylists at my fave salon, Melrose & McQueen for all these tips. They really work! Don’t forget my recent post about Atlanta’s Best Salon!
