MEN’S GROOMING TIPS WITH THE ART OF SHAVING

Fellas! And the Ladies of the Fellas: This post is for you!

My brand new sister-in-law (Hi Lindsay!) recently asked me if I’d influenced Evan’s grooming routine since we got together. My answer was YES! Almost immediately upon dating I got him into a face wash, a moisturizer and sunscreen. A gal’s gotta protect that handsome face!

But the thing that has actually changed the most for Evan’s grooming routine was starting to use a safety razor – which was recommended to him by my brand new brother-in-law (Hi Matt!).  And this is how Evan stumbled upon The Art of Shaving. One day he went in to get a new razor and walked out a shaving KING. With his essentials starter kit, his shaving game got so very ON POINT that he practically wrote this post himself!

Since then he’s tried all the different scents and perfected his technique, so we wanted to share the shaving love – and the before and after – with you all today.

THE PERECT SHAVE

Here are Evan’s shaving tips that he learned from his first visit to The Art of Shaving. They call them The 4 Elements of The Perfect Shave:

  1. Prepare:
    • Shower first to open up your pores.
    • Turn the sink on hot and put your brush in sink to let the water saturate the brush. While that’s happening…
    • Apply pre-shave oil all over the area to shave, including the neck and chin. This product is the MVP of the whole process because it creates a layer of protection and lubrication. Actually, it’s the pre-shave oil that completely changed his shaving game and has cut way down on the number of cuts and nicks he gets from shaving. If you are looking to tweak just one thing in your regimen – this is it.
  2. Lather Up:
    • Shake some of the water off and squirt (terrible word!) shave cream onto the brush or dip it into a small bowl of shave cream. Lather it onto your face.
    • Now you’ve got a double layer of coating, so you’re going to need a double shave…
  3. Shave:
    • FIRST shave in the direction of the grain.
    • Then re-lather with whatever is left on the brush and shave against the grain. Note the only reason you can do this is because you’ve done the oil pre-shave so you’re now getting into that second layer of oily goodness. This is when to revisit those hardest to hit spots along the jaw, sides of mouth, and under/on the chin. Basically all the curvy areas!
    • Rinse with cold water.
  4. Moisturize:
    • Apply after-shave balm. Here’s where you can do one last feel to see what you missed and do little tweaks over the balm (no need to relather).

Et voila! A clean, kissable face that looks, feels and smells great!

MEN’S GROOMING TIPS AND TRICKS:

A few other things Evan wants all you guys to know:

  1. He doesn’t use a regular razor anymore, but instead uses a safety razor from The Art of Shaving because:
    • Disposable razors cost a lot over time but when you buy the safety razor from TAS, it’s guaranteed for life. If the finish wears off, if it breaks for any reason or if anything is wrong with at all, they will replace it.
    • Add to that the fact that razor blades are really cheap. So over time you save.
    • When shaving with a safety razor, shave one half of your face with one side and the other half with the other side so you wear down the blade evenly.
  2. The TAS brushes are very good. The least expensive Badger Brush will last for 3 years! And the higher end brushes last for up to a decade and some longer (just depends how much you want to spend).
  3. The different scents can be used at different times of day. He uses lemon in the morning to energize himself and lavender for its calming effects if he shaves at night. If you’re not into fragrance, they have unscented versions of everything!
  4. Store the brush upside down so the bristles last longer!

If shaving for women was this fun, I’d be WAY more inclined to shave my legs more often (truth).
