T.G.I.F. Y’ALL!! Sure it’s St. Patrick’s Day and maybe you’re all wearing green but not me! It’s simply not my color. Guess you’ll have to pinch me. Know why? Because this spring season, I am going nautical and I’m doing it in style with one of my favorite brands, Old Navy. Know what that means? Easy on my budget. I’m saving for a wedding after all! Know what else that means? Stripes, stripes, and more stripes! Plus one of my favorite color-combos, navy and red. It’s easy to mix and match, looks sharp with all skin tones, and will work all the way through the summer season, too. Jump on in this post for two different looks and lots of inspiration. Let’s get nautical!
Okay – so let’s have the horizontal stripes discussion because you can’t get killer nautical style without them, but everyone says they can make you look wider. I don’t think this is always true. When you choose a stripe with a dark background, like on this knit jersey dress, you’ll minimize the widening factor. Plus, it’s short so it shows off my legs which narrows the whole line from head to toe. A pair of high-heeled faux-suede booties in a neutral color that mimics my skin-tone also adds length and slims, too. Another way to counteract any potential stripe-width is by wearing a solid color pair of cigarette pants. That’s what I did with the little striped swing tee and the red pixie ankle pants.
Okay great – now that we’ve got that covered, let’s talk about my go-to accessory this spring – the neck scarf. I love how adding one to any look is instant-chic and oh-so-Parisian-lady-meets-sailor-gal. A white denim jacket is also pretty fabulous, but I’d lose the scarf if you’re going to wear one and pop the color instead. Could you be more ready to go out on a boat?
I said it above, but I’ll say it again. What I love most about red and navy is how easy they are to mix and match. When I travel, I tend to choose one color combination for an entire trip and only pack items in that palette. That way, anything I pull out of the suitcase – even with my eyes closed – will go with anything else. These red ankle pants could very easily go with a solid navy tee and the striped scarf I’m wearing with the dress. The striped top could easily go with a pair of skinny jeans, and the navy dress could be worn with the navy anchor scarf and over a white button-down, or under a chunky navy cardigan for chilly nights. Stripes in similar colors can also be mixed and match, which is why this little chevron straw tote looks awesome with both looks.
So where are you going to get all these items? Old Navy – HELLO. These pants were $25, the scarves are each $9, the top was 10% off, the dress was under $30, the booties – oh the booties – I mean I could go on and on and on about the deals and steals, but I won’t. Oh wait, I just did. And here’s my other dirty little secret – I don’t like to spend a lot on my spring-time clothing because I am a sweaty Italian and it just doesn’t make sense. Old Navy is the perfect destination for on-trend yet classic pieces that don’t break my bank. Each of these items is in-store or online THIS MONTH, so get nautical and get shopping, y’all! Have a wonderful weekend!
