BEAUTY MUST-HAVES

(Faux) Fur + Flannel

I love to mix prissy fur accents with punky plaid pieces. The fur brings the flannel up a notch while the flannel brings the fur down a notch,  creating an effect that leaves me feeling both styled and comfortable for Saturday morning brunch.

It was a chilly morning here in Chicago, but I didn’t want to wear tights because I only had black ones, and I really wanted my main color palette to be in the olive/tan/gray family with a little black here and there to provide contrast.

I didn’t mind that a hint of skin was showing since everything else was covered up – I think it can be pretty sexy to leave a little showing when it’s cold as long as it’s not so much that people are wondering why you left your pants at home.

You might notice my lips are a bit dark for a weekend morning – not completely my fault! Last night’s impromptu Halloween costume required the use of black lipstick – it’s still there!

WHAT I WORE:

WHY I WORE IT:

I woke up feeling SUPER sassy. On those days, I think it’s best to choose an outfit that makes me feel a little rebellious so that I don’t take my mood out on my loved ones and instead on my outfit.

  • Like I said, I didn’t want to be bound by tights today – not after a week in sunny LA! I grabbed the green thigh-high, wool socks as the starting point to the outfit, knowing I also wanted to wear the flat tan boots with them since the color palette is similar.
  • I’ve noticed so many trend-setters wearing plaid flannel shirts with a feminine edge lately, and I’ve been wanting to try it myself. I remembered my boyfriend had a couple of these that he rarely wears, and one of them had an olive stripe running through it which would pick up the olive socks and would also maintain my foundational color scheme.
  • The fur vest is the outlier here but it’s the one thing I knew I’d grab next because, as I mentioned above, I think it adds such an odd but intriguing touch to the flannel top.
  • Plus, the fur vest had both color schemes – gray was aligned to the black skirt and hat, while the tan/white faux fur was aligned to the palette of the shirt, boots, and socks.
  • From the outerwear perspective, the green coat served two purposes – to round off the green thigh-highs and the green plaid, and to match the gold hardware on the coat to that of the boots. They have matching studs! (It’s the little things that fill me with joy).
  • The skirt was actually the last piece I picked for the outfit. With so many textures, patterns and themes going on, I knew the bottom I chose needed to be pretty neutral. I thought the black leather added edge but wasn’t too flashy, and I pulled it together with the black hat to create the bookend needed (a Belle Meets World Rule of the Game! Read that post for all my rules…) to make the black skirt make sense.

I think the best part of wearing this outfit is that I was actually asked a couple times if this was a costume. To which I responded, “Nope! It’s my outfit!!!,” with the greatest of enthusiasm.

Have a great week ahead!

XOXO,

Belle
