Let me cut to the chase. I was not super interested in getting engagement photos. But, I am really, really glad we did it – because they are so perfectly us!
None of the traditional wedding stuff you’re supposed to do interests me – a first dance, a white dress, a bachelorette party, a bridal shower, a gift registry – nope. Don’t want it.
In all honesty, we’ll probably end up doing a first dance to signal to our guests that it’s time to shake our asses and because Evan and I have some pretty decently beginner swing dancing skills. But my wedding dress isn’t white – far from it. I didn’t have a penis-necklace-ridden bachelorette party – I had an amazing shopping weekend with my mom and sister. We don’t have a gift registry – I don’t feel comfortable asking people traveling all the way to Mexico to also buy us gifts. And on and on.
But after some coaxing from our friend, who is also our photographer, we went for it. Now I think that getting our engagement photos taken was awesome and seeing them come out was even more awesome. I highly recommend it! And here’s what I recommend to you if you’re thinking about doing it:
- Wear whatever YOU want. Sure I could’ve worn something more bright, but I kept on what I was wearing that morning. I wanted to be comfortable and feel like myself.
- Just do you. We laugh a lot in our house. Evan is funny as hell and I’m his hype-woman so there’s always laughing, which totally came through in our photos.
- Shoot where you want to shoot that’s special to you. We did it in a cemetery! There’s a beautiful cemetery across the street from our place and we love to walk Bernie there, so that’s where we went. And we brought Bernie!
- A bonus: use the same photographer for your wedding so that there is consistency in the vibe of your photos! Our photographer is Nathan Baerreis, and he is fantastic! He is also one of Evan’s closest friends, and we’re so honored he’s doing both of these important event in our life. If you’re looking for a fabulous Atlanta-area photographer – he’s your man.
And that’s it! It was pretty simple and pretty fabulous. Do it!!
P.S. This one below is actually a PRE-engagement photo, also taken by Nathan Baerreis. We took it just a week before Evan popped the question, and it’s one of my favorites. Goes to show that shooting with the same photographer yields similar results!!
