HOW TO ADJUST TO A NEW CITY: IDEAS FOR STARTING …

We recently moved to Atlanta, Georgia and are in the process of learning how to adjust to a new city as adults – it’s tough! It’s not that I’ve never moved to a new city before – in fact I moved to Chicago about 4 years ago after moving to New York City about 12 years prior to that, so this isn’t a new gig to me. BUT, each time I do it, I am surprised by how unsettling, lonely, terrifying, exciting, humbling, adventurous and joyous the experience can be – all at the same time. It really runs the gamut of emotions, so you have to go easy on yourself while you adjust. There are several things I’ve learned along the way that I think might be helpful to others who are in the same situation or who are thinking about taking the leap. Read on for my ideas on how to start anew!

THE TOMBOY’S GUIDE TO DRESSING FOR WORK

A new virtual styling client of mine just approached me with a conundrum I’ve never dealt with – dressing for work when you are a tomboy. She’s recently started a new job in a new environment – corporate –  where she has to button up her appearance a bit but doesn’t want to compromise on who she is and what she prefers to wear. “I’m just a tomboy, who wears mostly black, and still cuts all her t-shirts into tanks…Heels, skirts & dresses are all gonna be off the table for me,” she said in our first exchange. How was I going to help her when I’m the queen of dresses and heels?!?! I panicked but then I really stopped to listen to what she was saying.

RENT THE RUNWAY UNLIMITED SUBSCRIPTION IS CHANGING THE WAY I …

I recently indulged in a monthly Rent the Runway Unlimited subscription, and it has really changed my relationship with my wardrobe. It is a fantastic solution for women who do not like shopping in public, who want to wear designer clothes without spending the money, who love variety but don’t want to grow the size of their closet, and who have a monthly clothing budget of $150. Read on for all the details – and for $30 off your first purchase from RTR!

STAGE FRIGHT + SIMPLE SUMMER STYLE

It’s been over a month since I’ve posted on my blog, and I’m having stage fright coming back to it. This is partly because I don’t know what to write about; partly because it’s been one of the hardest professional months of my life and I simply didn’t make time for writing; partly because I spend way too much time writing each post, pouring my heart and soul into the best way to wear eyeliner; partly because I haven’t really achieved what others have who started out when I did – though I claimed I was doing it just for me, it’s been hard not to get caught up in the comparison game; and partly because I haven’t been practicing what I preach lately – not taking care of myself or putting my best foot forward. Ugh – the identity crisis continues!

SPRING STYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

For the first time I was recently interviewed by the press as a Chicago style expert – what an exciting moment! The article – a blog post on the CBS Chicago website – shared my spring style predictions. You can read it here if you missed me plastering it all over my social media last month. OR, we can talk about it today on Belle Meets World! I’m sharing my spring style recommendations and some examples of what I’ll be shopping for myself, so read on for ideas and inspiration!

GIOVANNI ANDRADE’S STEAMPUNK ACCESSORIES – MEXICAN ARTISAN SPOTLIGHT SERIES

Living and travelling through Mexico these last two months has exposed us to so many different types of arts, crafts and one-of-a-kind pieces that I’ve never seen the likes of before. It’s a shop-a-holic’s playground. The best part about it has been meeting the makers of these items, shaking their hands, learning about their work and handing them money directly for the goods they’ve made. This will be the first of a series of posts that spotlight each Mexican artisan that we’ve met and purchased from, and I couldn’t think of a better place to start than with Giovanni Andrade’s brand of steampunk accessories for women and men, Laberinto.
