Culottes – a man-repelling piece of clothing that only your grandmother can pull off? Or a stylish trend that YOU can pull off? I’ll go with a combo of the two – a cute item to refresh your closet that men definitely do not understand (they don’t get the short pants thing). But I love them and I think they are quite flattering on women. In fact, I’ve been experimenting all summer with a number of ways to wear them for work, play and a night out. Read on for ideas and inspiration to fulfill your own culotte dreams!
WORK
For work, I think of them as one piece of a suit or a summertime substitute for trousers. I’ll pair a blazer with them to up the professional factor, and I’ll add a little sass with the shoes.
PLAY
For play I try to pair a playful top with eye-catching shoes, usually by matching colors or patterns between the two.
NIGHT OUT
For a night out, I’ll stick with an all black ensemble, but I’ll make sure the top and the shoes have a sexy factor to them so that I don’t feel frumpy.
And if you’re not quite sold on culottes yet, I will add one extra plug for giving them a try – these short pants can be worn all year round, and I’m quite sure this trend will continue into fall and winter. I myself can’t wait to pair them with sleek knee boots and a turtleneck sweater or some suede booties and a leather jacket as the seasons turn.
