For this year’s Madhatter’s Ball, hosted by the Lookingglass Theatre Junior Board (I’m a member!), I went for a look I thought would match the madhouse theme of the event: Effie Trinket from The Hunger Games.
WHAT I WORE:

WHY I WORE IT:
- I started with the inspiration photos of Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket and was really drawn to the butterflies.
- I then gave thought to what was in my closet that was just crazy enough to be Effie but that would be a look I could make my own.
- I found this blue hat at a vintage shop in Wicker Park and then went crazy at JoAnn Fabrics with butterflies, feathers and birds to create my headpiece.
- I also had my friends at G Spot Salon sew butterflies into my hair.
- The scarf and bow tie were also sweet finds from the same shop. My eyes are always drawn to bows, so I saw that first. Then I saw the yellow scarf and they layered perfectly but most importantly, matched some of the colors in the dress.
- The shoes were on the sale rack at Steve Madden, and I saw them by complete chance! They aren’t the same pattern but they are the same color palette as the dress, so it worked, and most people thought they matched perfectly (I wasn’t going to tell them otherwise!).
- I also found this envelope clutch with the right color palette at my favorite resale shop, Crossroads Trading Co. and then dug all these brooches and bangles out of my jewelry box – all gifts or hand me downs throughout the years.
- The finishing touch was the signature Effie-lips that remind me of Queen of Hearts meets geisha. The purple – well, it just had to be done!
My process: I like to lay everything out to prepare and then to problem-solve in case things don’t actually translate from my vision to reality. Especially the makeup! I didn’t use all of this, but it certainly served as inspiration!
