I recently read an article about the items a gal should stop wearing after 30. Among those were tutu skirts. Sorry folks, but I refuse to be told what to wear and not wear. Wearing a tutu is one of life’s pleasures, and so is rebelling against rules – especially unnecessary ones. In honor of my inner badass, I’ve chosen to be the punkiest ballerina I can.
For this look, I was thinking Black Swan meets Madonna meets Carrie Bradshaw meets Southern Belle. I bought the whole outfit for a southern-gothic/vampire-chic–themed wedding in Savannah, so my inspiration certainly fit the occasion.
I chose a punk studded belt, black leather jacket, black leather clutch and black suede lace-up boots with silver hardware and a chain mail buckle; then black and silver jewelry to match the boots, a high bun for the dancer look, and bright red lipstick – because I’m a lady, obviously.
What’s underneath, you ask?! This mesh corset-like bodysuit is from ASOS . It’s pretty risque but is also full coverage, so I was drawn to it’s uniqueness when I was also shopping for this tutu. All the other corsets I found online and in stores were too revealing and unoriginal – this one stands alone or piques your curiosity when you glimpse it under my leather jacket.
And of course, there are the up-close details that you gotta check out! I love this belt – I got it at one of my favorite New York stores on St. Mark’s Place, Trash and Vaudeville. And these spiked earrings were a gift from a dear friend for a birthday years ago.I love how delicate but dangerous they are.
The shoes and the bracelets I’ve worn in past posts – they are some of my favorite accessories, and they translate easily between very girly and very punky. The satin bow is part of the tutu – a pretty standard embellishment for real tutus – which this one is. I had it custom made from a website called www.tutusforwomen.com!
Feeling rebellious?! I sure hope so – get out there and WEAR WHAT YOU WANT. No matter your age.
XOXO,
Belle
