BEAUTY MUST-HAVES

EASY MOSCOW MULES: A SUMMER-TO-FALL COCKTAIl I LOVE

If there is one cocktail that I will transition with the changing seasons, it’s the Moscow Mule. They are light and refreshing in warm weather but have the zingy spice of ginger for fall. I’ve been experimenting with all different kinds over the last month – some with fruit and other spices – but my favorite version is the simplest of them all. It’s just vodka, ginger beer and lime. In fact, I’m drinking one right now as I write this to get in the zone…

Why the Moscow Mule? Our dear friends gave us a set of copper mule mugs as an engagement gift last December. Justine remembered me commenting on how much I loved theirs and wanted my own set one day, and then she surprised us with this lovely gift many, many months later. It was so thoughtful! But it wasn’t until mid-July that I even got to use them because we’d been traveling for months and they’d been packed away.

As soon as we unpacked the bar, I was determined to learn how to make the drink so lovely they made a special cup just for it, and it alone. Turns out – there’s not much to it at all. Here’s where I’ve landed with my ratios and recipe:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 oz. Tito’s vodka (or whatever vodka you prefer)
  • 4 oz. Gosling’s ginger beer (have also tried Reeds but wasn’t as bubbly and spicy)
  • 1/2 lime juiced
  • Lime wedge to garnish (if you’re feeling extra special)

PROCEDURE:

  • Fill mule mug with ice to get it cold and frosty
  • Add in all three ingredients
  • Stir
  • Drink
  • Repeat

And you’re done. Girl, how stressful was that?! Not at all. And what’s also great about these drinks is that they are perfect for entertaining. Given they come in such a shiny beautiful copper mug, they look super-fancy, so your guests will be super-impressed.

Next up, I might try grating some fresh ginger into it, or adding some jalapeño and orange liqueur to make a spicy margarita-esque mule. Maybe as it gets colder I’ll try fresh citrus, as well, since that fruit actually comes into season later in the year. Here’s a great article I like to reference from She Knows with all the ideas that are inspiring me right now. Enjoy!

As for purchasing mule mugs – I love ours because they have a rounded handle with a flat top to place your thumb. They are ergonomically perfect, which I appreciate while sipping. I also like the hammered copper version, too! I also recommend this awesome bar tool we purchased that does 10 things in one. You’ll definitely need coasters since the cups sweat a lot, and don’t forget a cute little flask! I bought the Private Reserve one in the pics above for Evan, but for myself, I’d choose this cute little Happy Hour Kate Spade one. I also like to keep our liquor in pretty decanters with decorative label tags, but only because they are pretty – not because you really need to do this.
