Workwear Secrets – Dress Becomes Top

Today, I’ll start with the big reveal first. Scroll down to get the rewind in motion! I snuck this very-old, very-worn, leopard-print dress under a flowy skirt to create the illusion of a structured top.

Ta-da! Ready for work!

WHY I WORE IT:

There’s not much to this outfit really – and the pieces are mostly ones you’ve seen before, but what you’re probably seeing is that one of my most signature looks is a flared skirt, fitted top and a belt of some sort. I especially like this look on days when I’m feeling a little bottom heavy, so to speak, which I was on this day. This leopard dress (Calvin Klein, purchased at Filene’s Basement) just doesn’t fit me the way it used to around the bum and hips so I won’t wear it alone anymore.

  • I chose the flared skirt (Gracia, purchased on MyHabit) to hide my hips while the bodice of the dress would accentuate my leaner parts. It’s also flowy and long enough not to show the outline of the other dress underneath it.
  • The wide black belt was intended to have a narrowing effect at the waist..
  • On days like this, I also go for sleek and narrow hair to add length to my body.
  • The brown boots (brand unknown) were intended to call back to the brown color in the leopard pattern
  • The bright bag (Kate Spade NY) and lipstick (PLA Beauty) were intended to contrast against the deep, neutral palette of the outfit, but more importantly to lift my spirits with a pop of color.

While my body image woes didn’t last too long, choosing an outfit that brought your and my attention to my best areas certainly helped to brighten my day and add some confidence and pep back into my step.
