BEAUTY MUST-HAVES

DAY TO NIGHT IN THREE EASY STEPS

This post may offer you the simplest suggestion you’ve ever heard in your life, but perhaps it’s one of those things that is so easy no one ever says it aloud and therefore no one understands that the girl who effortlessly takes a fabulous work dress from day to night really is doing it, well, effortlessly. Having now lived in 3 major cities where my commute to and from work is a huge portion of my day, I simply can’t (and won’t) waste my time traveling home to change for a date or an event after work. It’s not worth my time on the train or in the car just to look fabulous. Because I can look fabulous in two steps. No car, no train necessary.

STYLE FAIL – WHY THIS DRESS DOESN’T WORK

I usually write about styles that do work, and things you should wear. But every now and then, I’ll choose something for myself that does not work and fails in an epic way. Rather than not post about it and sweep those pictures under the rug, I’m going to share the fail with you today. I had the highest of hopes for this dress when I rented it – it’s a navy sleeveless trench dress with an extra flap of fabric on the front and an asymmetrical neckline by Opening Ceremony. I thought for sure the extra details would be fashion forward, yet work appropriate AND that they’d hide and flatter my worst parts. WRONG…

YOU CAN WEAR A MAXI-DRESS AFTER SUMMER

Yep. I am promoting a maxi-dress. I can’t even believe it because I’ve been so anti ever since this trend came on the seen years ago (I guess it’s not a trend anymore then?). But I have since come to love the femininity and instant-outfit that long dresses can create for us ladies looking for any and everything simple. All you’ve gotta do is give it that extra little oomph to take it to the next level with the right shoes and accessories. Read on for my tips on pulling it off the RIGHT way this fall. That’s right, it’s not just a summer trend!

KEEP IT SIMPLE: WEAR A UNIFORM

I cannot believe that I of all people am standing before you, encouraging you to wear a uniform this season. But hey, people change! And I am all about ease these days because I am focused on my tiny sweet little family and building a new life in Atlanta. While I strongly believe in looking your best as much as possible, my priorities are aligned elsewhere at this time and I bet yours are too. As we get older, different things start to matter more than others. So what am I getting at? Well, I’ve been trying something new – wearing the same thing whenever I head out for a day of errands around town or whenever I work from home. Don’t get me wrong, the look I’ve chosen is fabulous, feminine and put together, but it’s also easy to clean, easy to wear and easy to pull off the hanger every. single. time.

WHAT TO WEAR TO A NETWORKING EVENT

Living in a new city means I am putting myself out there meeting new people a lot these days. When I recently got invited to a creative networking event, I found myself faced with the question of what the heck am I supposed to wear? Who knows who you might meet at these types of events – a new friend, a creative partner with a cool project you’d like to work on, your next boss? You never know, but I do believe it is so important to put your best foot forward when attending a stranger-filled meeting like a networking event. And the best way to do this? Dress well. In fact, dress better (but not too much better) than everyone else.

HOW TO WEAR FALL’S FLATTERING SAILOR PANTS

I’ve come to learn that you shouldn’t get rid of unique pieces of clothing because eventually, they’ll come back around in style and on trend. Take flared sailor pants, for example. They are EVERYWHERE this season. I scored a pair at a clothing swap last year and have been wearing them a lot – to many people’s dismay. “Oh. Are those back in style?,” someone asked me. “Wow, you have a lot of guts to wear something like that,” I’d hear. But check it out! These pants are finally on all the racks, and they look good on most women. Why? Because the front flap flattens a major problem area, and the flared leg helps to balance out our curves. So lucky for all of us, you can buy these pretty much anywhere right now – oh, and I am finally vindicated in my pursuit of the flared sailor pant!!
