A new virtual styling client of mine just approached me with a conundrum I’ve never dealt with – dressing for work when you are a tomboy. She’s recently started a new job in a new environment – corporate –  where she has to button up her appearance a bit but doesn’t want to compromise on who she is and what she prefers to wear. “I’m just a tomboy, who wears mostly black, and still cuts all her t-shirts into tanks…Heels, skirts & dresses are all gonna be off the table for me,” she said in our first exchange. How was I going to help her when I’m the queen of dresses and heels?!?! I panicked but then I really stopped to listen to what she was saying.

EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR CLOTHING

I’ve been doing my own laundry since the age of eight. My Dad and I would bond over the power we felt in taking care of our own clothes in our brand new washing machine. But I quickly learned that one wash and dry in hot water and on high heat would take a brand new cotton shirt and make it look like it had been around for all eight years of my life. This infuriated me – why did my clothes have to look old when they weren’t?! And wasn’t there a way to keep my old clothes looking new?! YES – there was. There is! It requires extra time and effort – but it’s worth it.
