BEAUTY MUST-HAVES

YOUR FAVORITE TOP TWO WAYS

I don’t know about you, but I am definitely NOT one of those wear it once kind of gals. I only buy pieces that I either love so much I can’t wait to wear them again or that are so versatile I can’t stop wearing them because they go with everything. This gingham ruffle top is one of those uber-versatile-can’t-stop-wearing ones. It looks so killer with denim that I’ve found at least two ways to wear it and want to show you how you can take a favorite top and do it, too!

WHY MIDI LENGTH IS THE BEST LENGTH

You might’ve noticed that I can change my mind about certain styles over time. One day I hate peplums, the next I love them. I thought orange was the worst color ever. Then I challenged myself (and you all!) to try it, and now I just can’t get enough. Today I’m obsessed with midi-dresses but just a couple months ago I thought it was so unflattering. I think that just goes to show that you have to work with something for a while until you find the best fit for you. And you also have to stay curious and open-minded about clothes if you want to unlock your most flattering and fun style.

THE PEPLUM GETS AN UPDATE

Boy what a whirlwind couple weeks in Charleston! We had an amazing time and also some amazing shooting opportunities in this magical and charming place. The best part about shooting pics when you are traveling is it gives you a chance to find all kinds of secret spots. The key is to make sure you pack (or purchase!) looks you want to shoot and that you can wear out and about while you’re exploring town. And shop I most definitely did!

IF THE DRESS DOESN’T FIT, YOU MUST DITCH IT

Some of my beef with style blogs is that they spend so much time painting pictures of ‘attainable’ lifestyles full of lovely clothes that all fit perfectly and look like a dream, that are on trend yet personalized just for you and that don’t break the bank. But in a world full of fashion hits, no one seems to acknowledge the misses all that much. Like how do you know when a dress just doesn’t fit? Our bodies and their flaws are such personal things that when a dress doesn’t work, we take it personally as if we’ve done something terribly wrong and don’t deserve to find a different style. Or we can’t bear to go up to the next size because that number defines who we are so we pour ourselves into it and feel self-conscious the rest of the day. But what if instead we found power in knowing the exact signs that something doesn’t work? I’m going to use myself as an example today.

SLIM DOWN – PUT A BELT ON IT

If you were to ask me what my number one piece of style advice is, it would be to put a belt on it. But since you didn’t ask me, I’m still gonna tell you because this is my blog…so put a belt on it, bitch! This one trick is an instant visual slimmer. Check out these before and after pics to see what I mean…

WEAR A COLOR THAT MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE

Anyone else out there terrified by orange?? I sure am, but this weekend I found myself drawn to it – I was having coffee with my sister, and I wanted to feel happy and bright to celebrate. We hadn’t seen each other in weeks! I found myself reaching for this shirt and blazer thinking, ‘Wait, what if I tried these two pieces together? Can I pull this off? Will I look like a giant persimmon?! (is that a bad thing?!)’ But I gave it a chance – and loved it. In fact, I walked a little taller on my way to our coffee date!
